-Perceiving Art Through Sculpture-
Leslie Edwards Humez is working with illustrators to take two-dimensional contemporary art off-the-wall
and put it into the hands of the blind via 3D sculpture. For many, to touch is to see.
Mission
The Short Story - Saturday June 2, 2018
Leslie Edwards Humez is working with illustrators to take contemporary art off-the-wall and put it into the hands of the visually impaired with sculpture. For the blind, touching is seeing.
P.A.T.S. is a collaboration of artists that will deliver a new arts experience: an interactive, hands-on opportunity for the visually impaired that enables them to touch the work of some Cleveland artists for the first time. Leslie is capturing the spirit of paintings in sculpture.
Added to this innovation is a surprise benefit for galleries who can now serve a new audience -the visually impaired- and enhance the arts experience of sighted visitors as well. Imagine an all inclusive, accessible new way to engage with an artist's concept. When both a painting and sculpture are exhibited side-by-side, the information enters the senses through touch as well as well as sight.
Is this idea a bonus? In preliminary tests we found that sighted visitors were simply blown away by the thesis. Some were speechless. All believed. In general, visitors found the experience emotionally profound. A typical reaction was, "Why hasn't this been done before?"
And so we have begun...

Perceiving Art Through Sculpture·
P.A.T.S. -Perceiving Art Through Sculpture- is this Cleveland sculptor's effort to take contemporary art off-the-wall and put it into the hands of the visually impaired with sculpture. For the blind, touching is seeing.
CMA, to its credit, offers limited touch tours of the sculpture of long-dead classics. But P.A.T.S. hands are in the wet clay and on the pulse of living, breathing Cleveland artists whose feet are on the ground and whose work is influenced by today's issues. By deriving sculptures from contemporary painting or illustration, P.A.T.S. will deliver an entirely new experience to the visually impaired. Make no mistake: this is an idea so uniquely different that a local organization advocating for the blind has already agreed to promote our events and I'm grateful for their early support.
It is P.A.T.S.' mission to host special events and to promote the exhibition of original illustrations alongside their representative sculptural forms. Added to the gallery display will be a 3D reproduction for the visually impaired to touch. This fresh, new triad of ways to view an artist's concept opens doors for the visually impaired that would otherwise be locked. It raises the bar for galleries and creates a new experience for both artists and enthusiasts, and it gives hands-on experience to those perceiving art through sculpture.
One P.A.T.S. collaborator and I are currently continuing to run modest tests to gauge public reaction. Watch this page for a couple of June and a July announcements. Follow us and see whose work is being sculpted and find out where you can see it. Share and show your support in any way you can.
P.A.T.S is calling for a few artists to collaborate who'd like to have their characters turned into sculpture. This is an opportunity for those who illustrate to be a part of noble idea and share in its exhibits. Both 2D originals or prints and the 3D form of the work will be exhibited together with the intent of growing our following, picking up a few sales and expanding the arts and social experience of the visually impaired.
Suitable work for sculpting consideration will be in a style that meshes well with the sculptor's world view. Your best bet will be cool and classical characters, critters, comics, toons, weird beasts, aliens, monsters, bad guys, super heroes, girlies, vamps, killer clowns, cuties, cats, dogs, cuddlies and anything your imagination can conjure up. Only full-bodied characters (head-hands-feet) and original concepts can be considered.
P.A.T.S. is a not-for-profit collaboration run on less than a shoestring. We are also searching for an electronics wizard who will help us explore the relationships between color, temperature and touch.
Special thanks to all of you for your encouragement, trust and support. Thanks for reading.
