3/19/15 Here's a happy afterthought. When I created the 3D icon for this work, I sent word that I had excercised creative license by turning their icon's frown upside down. Why?
After meeting the owners, it was clear that a smile was the image they wished to project. Apparently they agreed. Here's pics of their Muffin Man icon, l. to r., before and after. This, of course, proves the old adage,
"The smile you send out comes back to you". :) 9/4/2014 This has been a challenging and exciting commission. Rarely do I get so involved in a project that I have no time to post the day-to-day on this website, but this has been one.
Thanks to the generous and artistic soul of Main Street Gourmet's CEO Harvey Nelson, the community will be able to see Sweet Somethings at Zeber-Martell Gallery & Clay Studio in Akron. It is a contender for the Akron Arts Prize 2014. Details to the left and below. All others, enjoy the slideshow and visit the show to vote! 1 May 2014 (Frames 1-4) I've begun working to replicate MSG's chocolate chunk cookies. First I created the chunks of chocolate, then a couple of variations on the cookie theme. Check out the pics to the left. I like the second sample. I'll make a couple more!
19 March 2014 While awaiting photos of baked goods and the MSG work environment in which the finished sculpture will be displayed, I shopped for display dishes at a number of import and department stores both on and off line.
By the end of the day, it was pretty clear that what I have in mind exists nowhere but in my imagination. No problem! Better to create a pedestal from scratch that's ideal for the application. What I did see while shopping were some striking plates whose large, loose splashes of summery color suggested flowers; this will inspire the pattern for the proposed two-tiered pedestal. I've weighed all the options and ordered a 13" glass plate, and two pedestals: one 10" and one 7", which I'll assemble with industrial aquarium glass glue. 16 March 2014 Preliminary Notes
Over the course of the past several weeks I've corresponded with CEO Harvey Nelson who has offered useful suggestions and engaged me to proceed on his exciting project in the way I work best: intuitively, without preliminary sketches. I'm most as ease when I can combine the basic premise with cues taken from the process itself. In a very real sense, being absorbed by the workflow (as opposed to following specs) frees the imagination to explore those happy little avenues that invariably appear. It's that freedom to explore that gives the work integrity and makes it a partner in its own creation. What are the keywords? Desserts, bountiful, gourmet, natural ingredients, tabletop, conference room, realistic, life-sized, manufacturer, tools of the trade, wholesome, glass, elegant cake stand. left, opening night, photo credit: Courtney Cable, Downtown Akron Partnership |
